    Culturing Flies

I did a quick search of the forums / google for Fly Culture. I know, I could search harder but does anyone have an article on how to house/culture flies? I was thinking it would be very simple. Afterall, these creatures breed, eat, and reproduce in trash cans. I was thinking of a cheap glass...

Glue from Hot Glue Gun Toxic?

Thanks for info on the glue, now I see why you all use it. Suppose my common sense factory is shut off today. About the job. Unemployment isn't enough here in IL even if you work your butt off and never use it. I think it's funny how some folks barely work yet collect unemployment/welfare...

    W00t! My first successful breeding!

Whooohoo!! I put them together in one of Hibiscus's large nymph containers. They started on opposite sides. I was so nervous for the boy because he's 1/3 smaller than her. I did feed her crickets until she just started ignoring them. I think she tried to make an ooth because their is a...

Glue from Hot Glue Gun Toxic?

I've been placing strips of fiberglass screening into each of my 32oz mantid cups. This allows both the mantid and feeder insects greater access to the lid. Most mantids hang from the lid and when crickets cannot reach the top, the mantid generally will just stare at the cricket who is...

    Bee Poll

I think this stuff is great to discuss and most of us could pontificate endlessly on the topic. For me, I have 3 feeders. Crickets, Fruit Flies, and recently... house flies. I've caught big beetles hanging out near lights or other wild stuff but never things that I think could harm a mantid...

only in captivity that they turn cannibal

I personally enjoy a nice milk chocolate bar or a freshly made ham sandwich after mating. Also, a smoke out on the balcony while checking out the evening stars is a perfect ending. Not sure if those would help out with the mating but they could create a more "calm" environment.

    My bug room

You gotta be there to truly appreciate it. The sounds all around you, the movements, the sounds, smells (lol), and the heat! It was awesome sitting on the floor, llooking at all of her bugs and talking about our mantid experiences! Her husband is a cool guy with a pinball-machine hobby and...

    Don L.

Don L. goes far above and beyond what anyone would expect from a breeder. Don sent me an Ooth a couple of months ago that didn't hatch. I mentioned it to him in conversation and he just sent me more than roughly 10 ooths! My God this guy is AMAZING! He took a bunch of his time to explain...

    KentheBugGuy/hook33 and thebugwife

Hey! I've heard nothing but good things from KenTheBugGuy and his communication was great. He's very nice/polite. I actually first heard of him at a local reptile/bug shop here in the Chicago area. I ordered 6 Grizzled Bark Mantis - Gonatista Grisea - Small nymphs.. $106.70 USD and $13 of...

    May Take The Dive!

"book" is a funny word to use for such a document. The last novel I bought was a new release for $9.95 at Border's (The Time Traveller's Wife). Now THAT was a book. The information in the Praying Mantids: Keeping Aliens is vital, key, important, cool, awesome and organized. It does include 2...

    Dead Enclosure

Thank you, and I'm a lucky guy for having such a generous friend :) . 4th and 5th are with glass doors open, and glass doors closed. I wanted to show the difference. Here is a link to the whole Mantid folder on my photo bucket site. Not sure why you get red X's on those pictures :)...

    Dead Enclosure

I'll have to dig around these forums and find that post. Maybe I can try to match a more natural environment or just stick with what is easily manageable (non-green plants) as seen in pics.

    Dead Enclosure

Using one of my 12x12x12 Exo-Terra enclosures, I managed to make a pretty cool little enclosure for my Dead Leaf mantis. Kat, who is so incredibly generous gave me this pretty little beauty. Though she is large, using the full 12x12x12 enclosure seemed a bit much. I was concerned with having...
