    Attracting a male Tropidomantid Tenera

as there are no mantids native to uk, i have never had to/been able to do this. however i have read about people leaving female moths outside over night to attract males. this is usually done by leaving the females in a net cage. i think sometimes people use very coarse netting to allow the...

    two's company, three's a crowd...

she didnt seem stressed at all (she wasnt running about frantically or trying to get them off, and she was still catching and eating the odd fly), but then i guess it is very hard for us to know how the mantis is actually feeling. i removed two of the males from her just in case (the two at the...

    Removing ooth from plastic?

when ooths are on plastic i find it takes very little coaxing for them to just "pop" off. some can just be pushed off with your fingers or if you want with a scalpel/razor.

    two's company, three's a crowd...

as of right now i'm not going to get any fertile ootheca from this female, they are all still riding around on her, none have connected! whilst the previous female got mounted and mated within hours (by just the one male). @idolomantis i didnt put them on her, i put two adult females and three...

    Need Help

as the bent legs are two of the back four and not any of the front ones then it will still be able to catch food in theory. however, if it can't support its own weight and is dragging its abdomen, that's not really a great state to be in. you might want to consider putting it out of its misery...

    Mantis Shipping System

i think the most important thing is that simple is better. assuming the mantids are nymphs, a plastic cup with mesh lid, or some tissue trapped under the lid is fine. twigs/perches/substrate etc are not necessary and will most likely cause harm to the mantis as they bounce around the container...

    Methods to heat Gongy

i heat mine using lamps. i use run-of-the-mill cheapo desk lamps and high wattage bulbs. both are very cheap. i dont think leaving them outside and using the ambient climate would be so good as you say it is hot and humid and this species prefers it fairly dry. however i think the temperatures...

i need somones help or advice

i cant really help sorry. when i'm getting some fruit flies to start new cultures (if for whatever reason i have discontinued my own cultures, as that is where i usually get them from) i get them from a pet shop in enfield (in person, not online). however they are always pretty old and exhausted...

    Small ooths

i dont think amount of sperm plays a big role in the size of the ootheca. i say this because i have a p.paradoxa female who has just laid her 7th fertile ootheca (8th overall) and it is probably her longest yet. i imagine the hatch rate will be low compared to the rest of hers, but still, it...

    Florida mantids

interesting thread, i had no idea there were so many species established in usa. though it is a pretty big place with varied climates so i guess it was to be expected.

    Instar Question...

the way i read it is that it's the latter, kind of. mantids can grow at different rates, some may be a bit ahead, some may be a bit behind. even if theyre all from one ootheca, there are times when some will be an instar ahead, or behind. so i guess thats what people mean by "L3/4", it's...

    Making sure Im prepared.

sounds like you're on it! i cant really think of anything to add. hopefully the ootheca has a anothe couple of weeks to hatch so your cultures can get properly going, but youve mentioned that. also, when the ootheca hatches, leave it a day or two before introducing food (but you sound like youve...
