    Mantis eats goldfish, again

i personally think thats an oversimplistic way of looking at it but i do agree that some could see it that way. i think certainly in many creatures it is only sensory reflex action, but i dont think its fair to say it is this way for all animals in general. anyway, i think the whole "are we...

    Mantis eats goldfish, again

its not the same. that the fish is being eaten alive is not the main issue, the main issue is that it has a more evolved nervous system so being eaten alive is not the same experience for the fish as for something with a less developed nervous system.

Theory: Mantids do not 'hatch' as 1st instar...

L is short for "larval instar". I is short for "instar", and only used when referring to larval instars (not adults) so is also short for "larval instar". it has nothing to do with language, simply preference.

Does the female ALWAYS bite off the males head?

he wont be interested in mating so will basically be just another prey item wandering about the container, getting himself into trouble.

Does the female ALWAYS bite off the males head?

exactly (if you feed them both enough and wait until theyre both old enough).

    Growing faster?

if it is only 1cm long then chances are it is not subadult yet. my males are just over 2cm and are still not adult (i dont even think they are subadult).

    Deroplatys lobata

what does "boring" even mean when describing mantids? do some species sing, dance and perform stand-up? regardless, i would love to be keeping any deroplatys species right now, i just haven't seen them for sale in ages, maybe i haven't been looking hard enough!

The Natural History Museum (uk)'s insect collections

i helped out a few years back doing similar stuff in the coleoptera with max barclay and in the hymenoptera with john noyes. i think his main interest (at the time) was parasitic hymenoptera. was the lady in charge of the keys to the mantis drawers blonde and with glasses? it may have been...

    Water Container AND Misting?

the droppings in the water dish doesnt mean the mantis spent any time on/near it, im assuming it just happened to be on the lid/branch directly above the dish and happen to "pass waste" there. having a water dish is completely up to you but it is not common and certainly not necessary. for most...
