    My Giraffe mantis

Another first, I was able to hand feed my giraffe mantis with a BB fly. They are getting to show more of a wood like exterior.

CareSheet: Black Soldier Fly and Phoenix Worms

I prefer Black Solder flies over Blue Bottle flies. For two reasons, first they last a bit longer in the fly state in the fridge but they do take much longer to emerge from the pupa stage. Second they move and fly much slower than BB files. I lost my first Devil Flower due to a flying BB fly...

    stable fly vs house fly

I had false stable flies before and they did not live as long as house flies. Yes they are just a bit smaller than house flies but will get out of a zoo med glass terrarium due to door window gap. Real stable flies are not to be used at all. I also tried curtly flies which are flightless house...

    ID assistance

My understanding that carrots is not mantis favorite  vegetable and it seems that he was getting a bit sick when he refused the food the last night.

    My Giraffe mantis

Yes they are very cool and love to watch you with one of their  dominant features of having round eyes where they can not really hide them either. They are a bit pet-able and I can brush back their antennas like the ears of a rabbit without filching.  For me personally, I like the Giraffe better...

Female Mantis is afraid of something?

What I do when the enclosures temps start to get over 83°F is to put a very damp towel folded not to reach the bottom of the tank on the outside with a weight on top and run a little fan on as a emergency AC when the needs arise and can lower temps as much as 10°F. This works well in drier...

Female Mantis is afraid of something?

One idea I have but not a expert. Could she had been bitten? That is a very hardy mantis and I have the same mantis. She does have a infection or toxin, no question in my mind.  She is in a lot of pain at the same time trying to get ready for the next molt may not end well. I had a red armed...

    My Giraffe mantis

Both my photo and the vid shows the neck thicker than they actually are. Their necks are not quite as thick as the thickest part of a toothpick and barely as thick as the thinnest part of the toothpick. They need four times not three the length in order to molt property. Any slight bend in their...

Two messed up Chinese mantises, make me sad

Just added a picture of the giraffe mantis in the photo section here. Here is a you tube video of a rescued Male giraffe mantis from a spider web. Even in the wild they are a very social-able mantis to have. Mine are developing the same four color bands on the arms, blue, white, black and red.

    My Giraffe mantis

Here is one of my two Giraffe mantis. She is more curious than other mantis. This photo was taken after she ate a BB fly. It took about a hour and half to finish eating since they have very long and narrow necks. They have to stop eating after five minutes in order to swallow the well chewed...

Two messed up Chinese mantises, make me sad

Net cages are fine in your situation. I live in Colorado average humidity in summer is about 40% sometimes 30%. Making net cages or screen terrariums not practical for my needs. I have three 12x12x18 and three nano 8x8x12 terrariums.  Two of the tanks have under ground heaters with a most/wet...

Time to stock up on Exo Terra Terrariums at Petco

I am using the cheaper fiberglass screen roll at Walmart and I know the holes are small enough to prevent fruit flies,  Drosophila hydei from escaping.  I put in a small bow for the mesh, meaning a bit loose and attached using silicone which would make it easier to replace or repairs. My first...

Opinions on this aquarium for an enclosure.

I would replace the top with a Fiberglass windows screen. Ghost love to hang from the ceiling to capture flies and to molt but not always. Do not use a metal screen because the wires are crossed at the corners which could trap the feet. Fiberglass or shelf liner with the holes are good since the...

    Denver here!

Hi, I am around the Denver Boulder area. In general mantis prefer more in height than width in a terrarium in order to molt properly. I also used to be very deep in aquariums. I had kept a fresh water stingray which eats six goldfish a day for five years. I had a tube tank in which fish can...

    fly cost

It has been my experience that house flies are much more fragile environment wise. House flies can not handle the heat as well as blue bottle can. Black soldier fly hardly slow down in the fridge and seems to last a long time.
