    Disaster.

I'm so sorry Connor. This really sucks. :(  But, there's something to be learned in all of it... as devastating as it is. We all make mistakes...please don't be too hard on yourself. You obviously are a good pet owner.

Greetings From a New Mantis Keeper!

Hello and welcome! I, too, became a new mantis owner/keeper when we found a female Carolina on our porch this summer. They are so cool! Barry Mantilow laid five ooths and we had her about two months before she passed. I've got the ooths in the basement for now... hoping to keep at least one...

Sorry to hear about your loss. :(

Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

I know. :)  She's just so big... so much bigger than my Carolina I had. We have taken her out and let her roam around... so we're making improvements. :) She laid a 2nd ooth a few days ago, so now there are two giant ooths on the top of her critter keeper.

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

Well, Bruce, our Chinese mantis, laid another ooth last night! We also took her out yesterday and let her hang out on the pencil plant for a few hours, which she seemed to enjoy.  I'm guessing my new mantis from mantidkingdom.com will be coming next week... which is good, because I'm wondering...

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

There is no shopping for mantids locally; we just happened upon Barry a few months ago and decided to bring her inside. We don't have shops around here that sell them. So, it was either wait for spring and hope Barry's ooths produced and keep one as a pet, or order online. I'm not keen on...

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

Well, looks like I'm going to have to get comfortable handling a large mantis then!

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

I think I'm going to go for double shield. They seem close to my Carolina that I had. Looks like they might get a tad bigger.

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

I'm going to chat with DeShawn. I want a mantis that's easy to keep, so I may swap out for something else. I'm reading that this is not a good species for beginners... so I want to do the right thing and get something easier.

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

Well (I guess you can't say c3ap). I guess I need to get a heat lamp then!

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

Do they need more heat than what's in my house? Or just upon arrival?

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

I placed an order from Mantidkingdom - fingers crossed! I got a thistle mantis. I can't wait!

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

Cool - that's the forum I was looking today. Thanks Connor. I hope to get another one soon. We still have Bruce. She's so big! I like the smaller ones better.

Aww, sorry to hear it, my friend.  The spiny flower ones look CUTE. Do you have a site/breeder your recommend?

How cute! Where did you get him/her?

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

I just lost my first mantis, Barry Mantilow. We had her for two months and she laid five ooths. I'm sadder than I thought I'd be after losing her yesterday. I'd love to get another one, problem is it's winter in Iowa and I don't even know if anyone ships in winter. Since I have five of her...

Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

I'm not attached to Bruce in any way, unfortunately. She's so large that she intimidates me. She gets the same level of care, but we don't take her out 'cause I'm pretty sure she'd eat my face. LOL

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

That's a cool idea. My original idea was to put a mantis in resin (I make magnets), but now that I've had one for a pet, I don't think I can do that. It just seems too weird.

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, the ground has frozen here in Iowa and you can't dig into it. Maybe I could bury her in spring...
