Someone pick a color: brown or green

I found this yellow subadult female European mantid. Someone pick a color: brown or green. I will make it become that color in its next and final molt. I hope it will not kick the bucket before that time. ------------------- Update (6/14/14): This will be its living conditions until its...

Why are all my iris oratoria mantids dying after I feed them honey?

Not sure why you would be feeding them honey. I never feed mines honey and they do fine. What's your set up (lighting and temperature) and do you mist? The environment I keep mines is dry, there is light, and I mist only for them to drink (not for molting).

Can an indoor iris oratoria be let go in AZ 111 degree waether?

Go ahead a let them out. They should be fine I think. As for the inbreeding, don't be concerned about it too much. I've specifically inbred my oratorias for over 10 years, and still going, and they are fine. If there was anything different that I've noticed, I'd have to say that my males...

    The bounty of naturalized mantises.

Have you talked to MantidLord since he has a similar project? Based on his profile, is attending Cornell University in New York.

Are 2nd instars ok together or should I separate them?

Looks like yours are doing just fine. When those 2nd instars finish hardening up, they will feed on the 1st instars. Feeding them will reduce the cannibalism, but it won't prevent it. You might not see it, but you'll realize it when you see a very fat 2nd instar.

Can an iris oratoria nymph molt on mesh that is REALLY high?

Maybe for tropical species, you might need a higher humidity. The Mediterranean mantid isn't called "mediterranean" for nothing. I'm my experience, they do not require that much humidity. I don't frequently mist mines, but when I do mist, it's only for them to drink to keep them hydrated and...

Can an iris oratoria nymph molt on mesh that is REALLY high?

There's no need to put a mesh to catch them. If they fall during molting (highly unlikely that they will fall), whether there's anything to catch them or not, they'll sustain damage because they are still soft. Because they are in the first instar, all they really need is something ~1 inch off...

    What Influences Colour?

I don't keep mantids in terrariums with fake plants so I can't comment on their color change indoors. But outdoors, I favor that the color depends on the mantid's surroundings. If you want a green religiosa, make it stay/rest on a green shrub outside (no brown branches). It'll become green...

question about strange lifecycle of a Meditarranean Mantis

My females also call again after they've laid their second or third ooth. Although one mating is good, my guess would be that the female might want to add a little more to what she has or that she might want genes from another male for genetic diversity. As far as parthenogenesis, she won't...

question about strange lifecycle of a Meditarranean Mantis

Congrats! I guess it could apply for ooths as warmth is needed. When I say the sun is the key, I mean that with the aid of sunlight, after each successive molt, they will try to match the color of the vegetation they are on. 1) I don't know of any ant small enough for newly hatched nymphs. I...

    instigating threat display

Put your mantid in a jar, close it, give it to your chicken/bird. The moment the chicken/bird pecks at the mantid in an attempt to eat it, the mantid will go into threat display. End result: your mantid is now in threat display and no one got hurt in the process.

    Mediterranean Mantis Life Cycle

They are known to be parthogenetic. Yes, they may have grown fast (I'm sure there's a limit to how fast they can grow too) but that might not be all to it. I've never lived in Arizona, but you can comment on the weather part. I think since Arizona gets warmer early on, the mantids may have...

    Mediterranean Mantis Life Cycle

As Ranitomeya said in your other post, it depends on the conditions they live in. In a warm environment with abundant food, they'll grow faster than those that don't have access to those things. To avoid them hatching out early, leave them outside or put them in the fridge. Hmm...Arizona sure...

    Help Me ID WC Mantis

Since you've found your answer, I've deleted my images since they were aimed to assist in the identification and they were not mines to begin with. 91 degrees on Wednesday? That's crazy. Up north a little, we could use some of that extra water the central and east U.S. has been getting.

    Help Me ID WC Mantis

I was getting excited that this could be another U.S. Stagmomantis spp., so I had to find out the best I could. Here goes nothing. (sorry, I'm horrible at uploading pictures) http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?app=galleryℑ=5084 The wing veination above resembles the below picture found...

    Help Me ID WC Mantis

My comments are based on what I observe. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. I'm more familiar with the common native/naturalized U.S. mantids and so it would be a delight if it was a rare/un-noticed Stagmomantis native to the U.S. (assuming DETHCHEEZ is from Long Beach) that I've not seen. As for...

    Help Me ID WC Mantis

I have no idea what species it is since I'm more specialized in the common mantids found in the U.S. The mantid looks like it's a species from the tropics or some other place in the world.

    Help Me ID WC Mantis

This is neither californica, iris, limbata, european, or chinese. It's some exotic mantid. I hope it's someones lost pet and not a soon-to-be-naturalized species.
