I'm having trouble instigating full threat display in my adult mantises and was wondering what you guys do to cause this. Occasionally, for photographic purposes, it would be useful.

My boyfriend cupped an adult lobata with his hands today, and she was instantly really irritated and went into a very intimidating threat stance. I haven't tried replicating, but maybe try that? I'm sure other people will have more foolproof ways though xD

Teasing or striking in anyway is NOT cool. Alot of people here feel the same way. Did you see the thread in photos Precarious made about the new species? I remember he said he waits for them to be is a bad mood.

I knew some things that would get my R. Valida diplaying, tv or my kindle playing Inuyasha. She hated that show! She also did not like a former friend of mine.

There are all kinds of things you can do without hitting or teasing.

My budwings can get pretty moody sometimes. They threat pose each other through the transparent walls of their enclosures, and they're not even adult yet (wonder how they'll act as adults). For example, if one moves suddenly, the others will suddenly get irritated.

Put your mantid in a jar, close it, give it to your chicken/bird. The moment the chicken/bird pecks at the mantid in an attempt to eat it, the mantid will go into threat display. End result: your mantid is now in threat display and no one got hurt in the process.

I don't like irritating my mantids but sometimes if you touch their wings they will do a treat display.
