    Sick Orchid mantis

I might give Sakura drumsticks of crickets. See if she eats them. She seems quite hungry, though she did vomit once again today. I've given her a little bit of honey. Still no noticeable change in her energy. She is exploring and hopping around. The only thing wrong with her is the vomiting.

    Sick Orchid mantis

I hope so too. I'm going to just leave her flush her system out. Hopefully she recovers soon! I ordered BB spikes from Green Oasis. Hoping they arrive in time for Sakura to feast upon them. She won't eat until then.

    Sick Orchid mantis

How do I get bluebottles... that is what bbs are, right? I've never used flies. Is there a bluebottle culture?

    Sick Orchid mantis

Since giving her a little bit of banana, the dark coloration on her thorax, which was especially noticeable underneath her wings, but also on her pronotum, is now largely gone. So it seems giving her the banana caused her to "swallow" that stuff back into her abdomen.

    Sick Orchid mantis

My female Orchid mantis Sakura has been having some symptoms lately. The first noticable one was she had a darkened coloration visible through her thorax, especially above her wings. Then today I discovered vomit in her cage, cleaned everything out and discovered more vomit later on. Her...

Why does a cooler temperature make a ghost mantis dark?

I have five Ghost mantises... they are so adorable, but I keep them all in their own container, each container gets a misting the same time as the others, each mantis is fed the same way unless they are approaching a molt (then I switch to smaller prey). Each one has a slightly different shade...

    Help! cat bite?

If the wounds on her back are punctures into her main body cavity, those would be the ones that do her in. I'm not so sure about the eye injury. I've seen mantises with old eye injuries (though still from after they turned adult) out in the wild and they looked like they toughed it out...

A boatload of T. sinensis L1 for trade

So last week I woke up to an interesting surprise... dozens of tiny mantises running loose on my desk. An egg case that I had forgotten about hatched out in the open. Yesterday, the same thing happens yet again from a second egg case! Now I am up to my ears in Chinese mantises. A few things...

Mantis abdomen suddenly swollen after ooth laying

I've had a mantis live 18 months. It seems Vex has been vomitting a bit as well. This is not a good sign :( I'll try spraying her, but it looks like she might be on her way out :( She had a good life! No doubt about that, and I have 11 other mantises including nine nymphs that will bring...

Mantis abdomen suddenly swollen after ooth laying

No crickets. I've been feeding mealworms to the adult mantises I have (which are three, two Chinese mantises and this ol' Shield mantis here)

Mantis abdomen suddenly swollen after ooth laying

So the last of my Shield mantises named Vex recently laid her second oothecae. Infertile, since I never paired her up with a male. However, something quite bizarre happened and I'm quite baffled as to why. Her abdomen expanded like a balloon. Just last night her abdomen was normal sized, a...

How Many Mantids Have You Had?

I've kept and cared for thirteen different species of mantis. Right now in my possession I have an elderly (14mo) Rhombodera stalii female named Vex. I also have four adult female Chinese mantises. One I'm likely keeping and the other three were brought in because there will be frost tonight. I...

The heaviest mantis I've ever held!

If a mantis is fed beyond capacity, can the abdomen burst?

    Rhombodera sp. L2 nymphs FS/FT

Thank you to Peter, or whoever, for changing the title of this thread. I wasn't aware that this species was for the most part unidentified except for genus. I had success breeding them with just one mating, they are a strong species and very beautiful. All nymphs are sold at this moment. Thank...

    Rhombodera sp. L2 nymphs FS/FT

The length of the mother was about 3 inches long, she wasn't the largest of the bunch I got. Largest measures 3 1/2 inches. I actually am not entirely sure what this species is, but it is most likely R. stalii instead of R. basalis. I don't have any adult females that I'd be willing to spare. I...

    Rhombodera sp. L2 nymphs FS/FT

EDIT: I got the original six from Peter Clausen, and I've sent him a message about it. Just letting you folks know. The pictures of the mother show what you'd be getting when they become adults (and are female, of course!)... Another note, be careful around adult females with your fingers, they...

    This one has me stumped...

Not too shabby at all, especially for males that don't live as long as females (usually) The oldest mantis I have, Gnarles, a female dead leaf mantis, hasn't lost her tarsi, but they are curled and two of them seem to be next to useless. She is still able to hang upside down from paper towel...

    vacation care

So far I've taken mine with on vacation. Only road trips thus far, no plane trips. The longest trip I went that I didn't take my bugs with was 3 days. That took some convincing on my part too because I was uncertain about leaving them alone for three days.

    Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches for trade...

I have 30 fairly large Hisser nymphs that at this point, taking care of them is impacting my health. Mantises don't cause any allergic reaction, but the roaches do. Even the big ones that I intend on keeping anyway. There are several strict requirements for obtaining my baby hissers. 1) Only...

How long can a mantis really live for?

Try to put her in a container with a mesh top, but also less ventilation so humidity is a bit higher. That may help. My dead leaf mantis Gnarles laid her ooth. It's unfertilized, and it's also the nastiest thing I have ever seen. Increasing the humidity seemed to help though. She certainly...
