    Tragedy

The skin should split on the dorsal pronotum. Then everything usually works itself out from there.

Mantis died but no death curl...?

I have had them die in a few different ways. Folded legs is the most obvious though. I recently had an adult female die in a very lifelike position. She didn't even go limp. Her colors have not faded in a few days either. It is very weird and confusing. I am leaving her like that to dry as I...

Lets see the face behind the username!

Nice! I like how bugs look bigger on a childs hands too.

what kind of spider is this?

Photo isn't clear enough. What does the web look like?

    Gynandromorph mantis

I thought the same thing. In roaches, it usually appears that the whole body is a different gender, lengthwise.

    Molting and size change

That too. I used to think that a mantis was going to be as big as they look while they hang there all full of air. Then they shrink a bit. At least the abdomen does. lol

Slow, Unresponsive after large meal or pre molt

You can glue some grippable material, silk plant pieces, or sticks to the ceiling. Or even close the lid over some screen or paper towel. Those ceilings are not good places to molt from.

    broken front leg

It probably will, if there is any leg left and depending on what instar. What appears to be a forearm to me is actually a femur on them. The leg segments that are closest to the thorax is the coxae, then femora, then tibiae, and then finally the tarsae. When I have had mantids lose the entire...

    Molting and size change

Haha! I don't know the science, but they seem to come out like a gel, then it sets. I'm very glad I don't have to do that to grow! One wrong move and you're screwed. ;-)

    They're hatching!!! :)

Thanks for teaching me something that I was too lazy to look up.

    They're hatching!!! :)

I didn't even look to see your location. Do you have any native mantids in Canada? I have never even looked into that.

    They're hatching!!! :)

No problem. :) It bothers me that people sell things and either don't know what they sell, or are not honest about it. Im a real stickler about true native species. If a person chooses to buy a native species, that is what they should get. Tenodera angustipennis are around but certainly...

PM if you have any adult or close to adult males. Still looking...

    They're hatching!!! :)

Definitely Tenodera angustipennis. Narrow wing mantis. A cool mantis that will get larger than the Carolina. These ebay folks have been making a killing on oothecae that they are misidentifying. May I suggest that you contact the seller to inform them? This has happened to at least 2 forum...

    Carolina Update

I only see a photo of Bob. If you can put her over some currency or any common object. I could tell by size. Or a clearer dorsal or lateral pic. She looks presub, Maybe sub, but I can't see her buds well in the photo. Where is that handsome Spencer? Males are easier to tell by the wingbuds as...

    Ukmantis Newsletter

I was pleasantly surprised when I got my first newsletter and happy when I get more. They are always nice. Thanks Gill. :D

Has this happened to you ???

I have had a bagworm eat a nymph before. It took advantage of the nymph as it molted. Im sure that it is a rare thing to happen. If it has mandibles, it can bite. ;)

    mismolted mantis help

Sounds pretty bad. When I have caught that happening it was useful to mist the mantis and put something between the exuvia and body to brace it. Then I would let the mantis struggle free on its own if it could. I have had to gently slide it off of mantids that were badly stuck. It is very...

Tenodera sinensis Ootheca Unhatched After 4 Weeks

It is closer to 6 weeks in my experience. Garden shops usually keep the oothecae refrigerated. My garden shop Chinese mantids took about 6 weeks. 2 oothecae hatched within a couple of days of eachother. I doubt it is a bad ooth as you really haven't waited long enough. The waiting and...

    They're hatching!!! :)

If you bought the "Carolina" ootheca on ebay it is possible that it is misidentified. You may have Tenodera angustipennis (Narrow wing) instead. They have been going around. A clear pic of the ootheca can give a positive ID on what you have. I hope it is what you wanted. :)
