Its not unusual for a mantid to go after food. What Sp do you have?

I have heard about mantid vomiting from other keepers and have had similar experiences myself. Some of the time the mantid survives other times they die. There are theories to what causes this but no one knows for sure.

Locusts do have powerful legs and if the mantid is too small for the locust then it could be damaged in a struggle. As long as the locust is of an appropriate size you shouldn't need to pull the legs off.

Pupae and maggots are so very cheap that I would not breed your own. Trying to breed your own is gona be a bit smelly and messy. So personaly no, this would not be a good deal.

I think rocking from side to side is also an imitation of foliage blowing in the breeze, another aspect of Camouflage. You just spooked your mantid and it produced a healthy reaction.

I have some Hymenopus coronatus females which are quite active and often walk around their enclosure and the males look great when they fly around my bug room. They are probably my fav just to watch. :)
