Where did all the wild mantids go in AZ?

One of the females mated and laid 10 ooths.  I put half outside and half inside.  None of the ooths hatched outside!!!  The indoor ooths produced very small offspring that are too small to reproduce. I had 6 adult females, and one of the females actually died right after I tried to mate her. The...

Where did all the wild mantids go in AZ?

Hello! I live in Phoenix AZ. The last 4 years my back yard had many wild iris oratoria mantids.  Last summer hundreds hatched, but I noticed they were slowly disappearing. Oddly, the only ones that survived were the ones that lived on my cactus. They were mostly males.  I took the last 2...

Do I feed honey or not!!? My mantis is dying.

The molt was good. Then when he turned right side up to let his wings grow out, he was hanging from the mesh without anything under his back legs. I kept trying to place sticks under his legs, but then he would move.  His wings didn't completely grow out.  I tried the dissolved honey.  He drank...

Do I feed honey or not!!? My mantis is dying.

I am a first time Chinese mom. I raised a little male nymph, and now he is adult (3 days ago molted) with dried  out wings. I am sure he is dehydrated.  He is drinking water, but is getting weaker and weaker. His head is hanging and he can barely walk. He will not eat.  I am afraid if I give...

try to save a mediterranean gecko

Thank you for the compliment.  I let the gecko go in some bushes away from my property so my cats wouldn't get it.  I hope the gecko made it!

Questions about care for chinese nymph (I think)

My phone wi fi is not working for some reason.  I tried taking a picture with the computer.  It is bad, but I think you can tell it is not a ghost.  Could it be Chinese?  Thank you for all your help so far! I was appalled when the guys at the pet store gave me the container with this little...

Questions about care for chinese nymph (I think)

Today I was given a new nymph! (The guys at the pet store gave it to me because they did not know how to care for it).  They told me it was a ghost mantis, but it looks Chinese to me.  Anyway, I normally raise iris oratoria; they like it dry.  This new little guy needs to have humidity and heat...

try to save a mediterranean gecko

I let the gecko go back outside!  I kept her as a pet for a few weeks but she was not happy at all. I could not stand to see her suffering in the cage I put her in. Most my mantids seem happy to be pets. I thought the gecko would eventually be happy to have food and shelter, but she wasn't...

try to save a mediterranean gecko

Are the geckos responsible for killing nymph mantids?  I'm wondering why my outdoor mantids barely survived last summer. They started spraying for mosquitos too here. I know that's off the topic, but. . . My cats did kill one bird.  It was sickening, especially because they gave it to me as a...

try to save a mediterranean gecko

Hello, I live in phoenix, AZ and I get lots of these geckos in my backyard when it is warm out. My cats like to kill them- very sad.  Two geckos managed to somehow come inside and escape from my cats and live under my stove and cabinets since September.  I could never catch them so I tried to...

    What killed my manits?

Also, it is possible on top of the infection she might have been egg bound.  It looks like something bad got "stuck" in her abdomen. Has she been laying ooths?

Nymph first molt, back legs stuck. :(

It depends on how bad the legs are injured. I've seen some miraculous things with back legs healing (on younger mantids) as long as they are strong and fed right away.

    What killed my manits?

It looks like she ate something bad. It is probably an infection of some sort. Were all your feeder insects clean?  Crickets have to be kept really clean.  Also, if they eat each other, or if the dead ones are not removed right away, infection could spread. Or wherever you got your feeder...

    Miomantis bleeding(?) after molt

How cute! Just make sure he is getting enough liquids to replaced the lost fluid.

    Mantis shoots white "liquid".

Now looking at my cages, I do see a white substance on the wall. That they must be shooting from their rears! What is it? They have normal stools! So weird!
