They are starting their first moult!

As long as the humidity is good, they'll molt when they feel like it!

    Blepharopsis Consolidated

I got a great tip from RichS - if you are short on houseflies, or the B. mendica are being finicky, THEY LOVE HYDEI. Every time I put 5-10 Hydei in with my L4/L5s, they inhale them as fast as they can! ... and Hydei are easier to get and maintain in the dead of winter than other flies.

    orchid feeding question

Keep her well-hydrated post molt! Any flying insect should be fine - I got a kids butterfly net and if you just sweep it through tall grass you should pick up all kinds of flies and small butterfly/moths.

    Aluine - Sphodromantis lineola

The more you feed her, the more (infertile) ooths she will lay. Unless you breed her, IMO it might be better to feed her moderately, maybe 2 food items every other day, than to feed her as much as she wants.

    Reasons for ornamental dimorphism?

I call this photo 'Sexual Dimorphism' when I show it to people: Most people are shocked that the male is that much smaller than the female.

    Different types of fruit flies

FWIW I'm raising black Hydei, gold Hydei, and Mels. Maybe it's just that the black ones stand out I have but I think the golds are slightly smaller than the black Hydei, kind of 'mid-sized'.

    They HATCHED! Acanthops nymphs!!

Baby mantis popsicle = NymphSicle :) They must hang down on a thread as they hatch, don't they? The photo makes it look like they just appeared on the surface, fully-formed. Congratulations! :punk:

Fruit fly cultures - vinegar or no?

Wow - tons of info here, thanks! I had forgotten that the vinegar was a mold inhibitor - I didn't use any in the culture I made this morning so it will be interesting to see if it molds like crazy or not. Repashy: which one and where do I buy it?? I looked at their website and it looks like...

Fruit fly cultures - vinegar or no?

I have made fruit fly cultures for probably 40 years and whenever I start back up after a long hiatus, I read up on how others are making their cultures. When I got back into it a couple of years ago I read up on everything and started using a dash of vinegar in the water when making the...

    Ghost curiosity

Same here - that Rebecca is a troublemaker! :tt2: While I like 'mantis-looking mantis' like Hieros, I like the different/weird ones more! Ghosts are so cryptic and exotic, great for photography. I had mixed results in breeding them but I still love 'em.

    Starting Dubias

Going to get rid of them and either try lateralis or stick to flies and locally-caught bugs. How do you have your lateralis set up?

    Starting Dubias

Recently got some Dubia roaches and I have them in temporary housing until I find out the best way to set them up. I have done a search and read a bunch of threads but still have a couple of questions: What is the best bedding material? I have heard paper and moss - what works for you? They do...
