I believe that we cannot influence the coloration of our mantids (genetic tampering notwithstanding). I'd be delighted if someone can point me towards a lengthy, valid scientific study that proves me wrong.

What instar are your mantids? If they're L2-L4, they might be better off in a smaller container, to make it easier to find and catch their food. To address your "communal" question: most experienced mantid folks seem to believe that "communal" is an overused phrase that is often misleading to...
