    Hello from WV

    Welcome from Seattle!

    First half of January 2012

Thanks! Since there's some Gongy appreciation, here's a crazy angled shot of the crew in a 'cube. Note one of 'em had a significant molting complication (if you look closely, you'll see the difference) but is perfectly fine! I expect the issue to vanish after the next molt.

    First half of January 2012

I've got a crappy little camera but still wanted to share some of my recent activity. Oxyopsis gracilis He took a very flat approach during his first introductions! What are you lookin' at?! Red light district success! He was introduced to multiple females several times over the course...

    Humbertiella ceylonica

Round 10 was one of the best speed displays I've seen! Blink and you miss it (the strike of a preying mantis has been recorded as twice as fast as a human blink.)

My first mantis photoshoot!(+ my frog)

Nice shot! Looks like an orchid nymph with a moth?

how to hatch and feed Flies the easy way

Nice thread. Admittedly I'm biased and totally agreed as this is exactly what I use. :) I got mine from Rebecca as well (Rebecca runs mantisplace.com for the unaware.)

    White spots?

I believe that's mantis excrement. Like people, it can vary in consistency. :poop:

    Lone adolo male

Nice! Everyone raves about their adult colors but I think they have a great appearance as nymphs, even if they are a bit drab.

For all you skeptics . . . here are some pics

Good lookin' setups! I like the flowers in your netcube, the heat lamp arrangement looks very effective and the portraits are awesome. :)

    Large species

I noticed this pic on the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's blog, apparently this big specimen was presented at Edinburgh zoo. And here's a high resolution image if you want to see it in better detail.

    I'm on YouTube!

Sorry, the original text had some formatting that prevented it from working. The easist way I remove formatting is to paste the text into an editor (e.g. notepad) and then copy/paste it from the editor, not a webpage. In case that doesn't make sense, here's your video embedded into my post...

    I'm on YouTube!

Just edit your first post and on a new line, just paste the exact text that I showed you above.

    I'm on YouTube!

Perhaps because you didn't add a space between the colon and the URL. Also, the link isn't accurate, here's the line to use if you want the video to appear directly in your post: Hope this helps!

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Thanks man, I appreciate that. One of these days I'll try to get a large batch of idolo nymphs and give a serious run at getting a viable ootheca. Your success is an inspiration! :) By just having two, I wanted to gain some experience and a better understanding of their needs before I dive...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Confirmed, mismolt. :( She made progress before succumbing. I know it sometimes happens but this is my first/only mismolt in months, to have it happen on the final molt for a gorgeous idolo.... Bah. Time to up the humidity to better ensure a constant 40-50+ RH.

Oabama passed 'Indefinite Detention' bill on NYE!

Thanks Phil, I appreciate your perspective. And I especially appreciated the alliteration in your closure. Sibilant sussurating silken sheets?! Haha! Well played sir.

    Idolomantis Consolidated

I'm guessing she was really, really close to molting and just happened to fall. I didn't see any evidence of a molt (like you said, hard to miss) but it's possible. I didn't handle her for long - just enough to attempt a hand-feeding, water, and ensure that she still has enough strength to...

ok, bored and can't help myself!

Hrn. My image of Phil the Sage has been replaced by Phil the Naughty Old Man.

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Grr. One of my sub-adults appears to suddenly be near-death. After a tough day at work, it was a double-whammy to come home and find her on the floor of the netcube. I'm not convinced I've done anything wrong, she started ignoring food a couple of days ago and I thought a molt was imminent so...
