Orchid wings unfolding pics (beware bandwidth)

yeah, it was a calculated thing. the gong had absolutely no strength left, couldnt hold it's body up anymore. i guess the biggest risk was if there was something wrong with it that would be passed on to the orchid. you can see in the pic that the gongs got it's front leg over the orchids wing...

    pretty in pink

wow that's quite an intense pink on the orchid. if it's not humidity maybe it's just that it's from a batch that turns more pink than most? though strange that the wahlbergii would go pink too (tho i read they sometimes go by visual cues for colour changing). or perhaps when they are sprayed the...

    Steve Irwin

very sad. he was intense. he did an amazing amount of stuff in his life, and all good! he did always seem to want to push to the boundaries of the safety zone with dangerous animals ( but i guess some of that comes with the kinds of jobs he did). died in a legendary way. his poor kids and...

    Variation in Mantid Color

i assumed it was genetics with this species, but more of a random sequence of shades to give the offspring a better chance of survival overall ? has anyone seen lots of the same colour African Mantids in the same places in the wild? or has anyone seen one change colour over a few moults?

    Pollen feeding

for about 4 months i've been feeding my mantids just on inverts from my garden. i particularly go for the hoverflies, bees and garden spiders (the ones most likely to have pollen on). i've had no losses since i started this unlike before when i was using fruit flies and crickets. i think my...
