I had a female and male chinese mantis yesterday that i mated afterwords i put them back in seperate cages and closed the lids. When i went to bed i sprayed them with the mister and went to sleep. Threw the night i kept hearing clunking noises as if hey were falling or missing when striking their food. (i had put a grasshopper in) so when i awake i go to look at them to see what happened last night i look in the first cage a male chinese is in then my orchids are there but then on the last two cages (the male and female that i mated) They were gone. The cage lid was still closed but poof they were gone. After about a hour of seraching the entire house i found my female. However the male is gone no where to be in site. my guess is he flew around the hosue and my dog ate him. What my question is how did they get out of a cage when the cages were securley closed and with no spaces for them to fit out. :?

Well the lid wasn't secure then. Thats the noise you heard. Check up high. Look around windows, blinds, and curtains.

this has happened to me a few times ( just the other night i walked into my living room to find an adult gongylus gongylodes flying around!).

if the nettings not tight and secure they seem to push at it (trying to get higher perhaps). from there they even seem to be able to find their way out of my vivarium even though there's only a tiny centimetre gap, theyre crafty fellas

yeah i found my male mantis last night. I kept hearing a clunking noise and i looked up after i started to hear a buzz sound it was the mantis flying and it landed on the top of my head i knew what it was after a while. but the first few seconds were like a horror movie .evrey time they get lose they always try to fly threw the window but the glass stops em.
