Another exciting find in the wild (baby edition)!

Today is baby day, apparently. I have found two very young nymphs (L1 or L2) of, what I think, are two different species. I'm looking for second opinions. This one, I found in my front garden today. I believe it is a Hierodula nymph: And this one, I initially thought might have been...

Best mantids for me and questions

Seconding S. Lineola as a great species to go with! Can't say much about the others, though... You can really build your terrarium out of anything, as long as there's lots of vertical space and gripping surfaces for them to climb and hang upside down from. I don't think there's any one "best"...

    Green Ghost

Gorgeous lighting!! I want a ghostie so bad, but I worry about shipping to thailand ; A; Living vicariously through photos like these are a nice alternative, though. What a lovely mantis <3!! Beautiful shots!!

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

I have found another of the same species! A very beeeautiful one! This one is very different from the first one; very zippy, super energetic. It gives me all the more reason to believe the first one I posted about here is/was very sick when I found it. It's eating well now, and even appears...

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

Now I'm just confused, I was processing photos earlier today, and noticed two additional segments near the top, on the underside of his abdomen: Do you see them, too? @jsorigami I may owe you a drink for incorrectly refuting your observations! This mantis refuses to be restrained by the...

    Mantis kills hummingbird.

^^^ nailed it. A cricket, no matter how cute, has no central nervous system. And so, while it may be aware that it's stopped moving and things are not working properly, it doesn't have the capacity to feel nor consider pain. A mouse, on the other hand, most certainly can :( It's got little...

    My 'Pedes!

I have no idea what species they are, but I always come across them during my early morning walks, and have always enjoy lovingly harassing them on my way by (read: moving them from the side walk to under the bushes so that they don't get stepped on or baked)! And so, I finally caved in and...

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

GOOD NEWS, she's eating! I'm not sure why she wasn't, before--but as I type this, she's finishing off the lone katydid nymph I had left in her terrarium for her (her terrarium is so large relative to her that one small katydid was unlikely to give her trouble if she did decide to molt). Phew, I...

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

Ah, the back side of her abdomen is only five segments long, which I always assumed was more reliable than counting the front segments :> She's a pretty small species, it's hard to tell without some zoomin' in on that badonk. She remains completely disinterested in food this evening, and so...

    Mantis doodles

Ask and you shall receive! :D I did these ones as little graphics for subscription tiers on patreon page: You've already seen the last one, but I needed to include it with this for obvious reasons :D I have too much fun drawing these animals. I'm so happy folks love the drawings so!

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

@soundspawn: Thanks!! Can you tell me what their molting behavior is like? I literally can not get this one to eat, I've tried everything outside of force feeding it, and it doesn't seem at all keen on moving around (though she will if she has to and is quite sluggish about it). Just by looking...

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

Alternatively, Acromantis formosana?? Not sure which this is--being in thailand, I'd like to think it's a thai boxer hehe. Google searches come up pretty anemic on the behavior, care, diet, etc for these little dudes... Here's the one I found: I found her in a flower bed while I was...

How old was your oldest mantid?

My oldest is still kickin', she's a wild caught Heirodula sp., just over six months old, now :] What's the secret to having a mantis live 1+ years? How often and how much do you guys feed your adults (and does that have an effect on their life span)?

Tiny mantis laid a tiny ootheca

It actually did!! Unfortunately, I was across the globe when it happened, and received a frantic email from my housekeeper that they "Full up the tank!!!" Since I wasn't there, I just told her to release them into the garden haha! They're chances of survival are much better that way!
