    First attempt at mating Europeans

YEAH!!! It worked tonight. He pretty much had to be within inches of her before he started "pointing" at her. When he finally did make his move, it was a leaping mount!! wasn't expecting that :-) Keeping her focused on food really helped with keeping her eyes off him. Thanks for that :-) chris

    First attempt at mating Europeans

    First attempt at mating Europeans

This is probably another case of me over reacting... I've had this male since he was about a half an inch long, and has been a full adult for over a month now. My brother caught an adult female for me, but I have no idea how long she has been mature. Ok, so I tried following the "My proven...

    European or chinese?

Do Europeans live in the wilds of North Carolina? My mantis (whom I've always thought to be Chinese) has black spots in the "armpits".

Hey, thanks for the input. I think most of the fun in raising this guy is trying to understand why he does the things he does :-)

    Yoga pose

Also, sometimes when I walk by, he shakes his head and arms violently. It looks a lot like me when I first wake up. Do Mantids sleep? And if they do, do they wake up by shaking themselves?

    Yoga pose

Sometimes when I walk by, Manny is stretched out real low with his arms extended in front of him. I've been assuming this was him 'stretching' his skin in preparation for a molt. Well, he molted about a week ago, and he's started doing it already. Any idea what this pose is for. He couldn't...

    How long is molting process?

The only time I was able to watch a molt, it took about an hour. I have a male Chinese mantis about 2.5 inches long, if that makes a difference.
