    Orchid Enclosure Tips

I do the same with a few Critter Keepers and two small aquariums that have a hinged lid. Instead of the screen I use the plastic grid stuff similar to cross-stitch material that has small enough holes to keep in the fruit flies (I think you used to sell it too). The silk flowers & leaves...

    Flying beetles at night

I usually feed my crickets Fluker's Orange Cubes. http://www.petco.com/product/11817/Fluker-s-Orange-Cube-Complete-Cricket-Diet.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch These provide both food and moisture for the crickets. I have also tried the separate approach with the Cricket Quencher & dry Cricket...

    New (first) Mantis!

Those might be enough in the top but I think the sides might need some work too. What I have done on a couple of small aquarium type containers is cut a square-ish hole in the sides and put a nice fine mesh/net material over it. Usually attached with hot glue. The low temp hot glue is less...

    Mantid not eating

 What "I" think he meant to say is just be patient and keep it misted. When nearing the adult molting I've often seen them go 5-7 days without wanting to eat before the molt. Mikey

    New (first) Mantis!

Very nice looking home for your mantis. I like those mantids too. I have 2 of them (P.wahlbergi) now. Unfortunatly both females so no babies this time around. Is there more ventilation than the few holes I see drilled in the upper sides and top? I think there might be an issue with that if...

    Mantid not eating

It will be more like a couple of hours for the actual molting. Depending on the instar it might take a couple of more days before it actually starts. Just remember to keep it misted and don't disturb it during or right after the molt. It is most vulnerable right after it molts. Not...

    Feeding Nymphs

+2 Wheel bugs are predators just like the mantids. Well except they suck the insides out instead of eat the whole body. I have fed them to adult chinese mantids but would not feed to a similar sized nymph.

is there any doctor in the forum?

Ditto, er, +1 (2?) My crickets are always climbing to the top of the containers where my mantids are more than happy to much on them. I found some artificial "twigs" in the fake flowers area of a local craft store that work great. Stiff wire core wrapped in what reminds me of a paper grocery...

    Wanted Female Egyptian Mantis

I have a couple that molted to adults about 60 days ago. Did you need adults?

How to catch a Wile Mantis

I would regularly see the Chinese males late summer in Jefferson City, MO. Often at my front port light. I never could find any ooths though. Really bummed me out. Got excited finding an ooth in a bush near Kansas City visiting my sister but it had already hatched. :( Guess I'm not...

    'Ware flies!

OMG! You always have entertaining posts Phil but this one is near the top! Good luck with the vents and your wife's reaction to this little "out of cage" fly breeding experiment.

    Whats Wrong?!? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

The main thing to do is to make sure you mist them with water. Even if they are not hungry they would probably drink a drop of water or two. And adequate humidity is vital to their molting success. Just don't drown them. I don't think it's unusual for a mantis to not eat for a couple of days...

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

I just moved from WI near LaCrosse a few weeks ago. I have seen several Chinese Mantids in my yard over the past couple of years. Actually they were flying up to my deck to get the moths at my porch light. Of course that was late summer after they had reached adult stage. Keep...

    Newbie With Basic Questions

Wasn't there another person who had ventilation problems with the paper towels on top to keep the flies in? Maybe a smaller mesh screen on top and putting the paper towels on the bottom would provide better ventilation and better humidity control.

    Longest lived mantid?

I had a female Ghost live just a week short of 18 months. They were kept pretty cool for Ghosts though. Low 70's for the most part so they matured slowly too. The rest of that 'group' of 6 were closer to 13-14 months. Mikey

Pressure treated wood Toxic or safe?

If you wanted to keep the look of the original wood I would think a clear non-tinted polyurethane would be good to use. It can be glossy or matte finish depending on yuor choice. Once it's dry it would be non-toxic and would look great. If it works on hardwood floors in my kitchen I would...

Hey Rick, this is what one of my mantises thinks of your signature...

Very entertaining experiment! ^_^ My cat will also chase the mouse pointer on occasion but that was much more fun to watch.

    Shield Mating Advice

Have you looked over Rick's post on mating? http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7112 Other than leaving out temps that were discussed elsewhere for different species it looks pretty well written.

    How to kill a virus?

Woot! Glad it's all fixed up. Just make sure the antivirus stays up to date. It can't catch the new stuff if it gets behind.
