Ghost Male Not Interested in Food

I quit trying to force feed 10 days ago when the mantis didn't take food; it was futile. If he wants it, he can catch it himself. So amazing that one molt made the difference between a mantis that would eat like no tomorrow to one that eats so little. About every three days, yup.

Ghost Male Not Interested in Food

Compared to the subadult stage, the adult male ghost mantis has hardly any interest in food. Handfeeding is next to impossible. He will catch a fly or cricket eat all or most of it and will leave any other prey items alone. He eats about every three days. My Gambian male eats more often than...

    Adult Female Carolina Mantis Found

A close friend of mine lives near a wooded area and park and the last two times I visited I found mantids. I wasn't even looking. I was catching bugs for my ghosts. Earlier this month I found a grass mantis nymph (female) and she has molted twice since then. On Saturday, I found the Carolina...

    Communal Ghosts

Some mantids can be kept together, but I have not heard nor read at what density. Yen's Idolomantis are doing alright even when they congregate near each other. I'm keeping my ghosts in a colony separated only be gender when possible. I don't want to put too many in one container and I would...

Great molt and then I don't know

Yeah my ghost is dead. I can only think that perhaps it was an internal cause, like an infection. I have heard of others just dying suddenly. Well I have three others and hope it works out. If I fail to breed these I'm going to move on to another species that meets some of my preferences.

Great molt and then I don't know

No she is hanging from a branch by three legs and the molt was nearly 24 hours ago. She did not fall while molting. It looked textbook perfect. Her posture and motions are quite different from all the other ghosts and their molts. Perhaps you should elaborate on your reasons for giving up...

Great molt and then I don't know

My female ghost molted to adulthood last night. It looke like a great molt; no deformities. Today she is no hanging to the branch like the other adult female, she barely moves and hardly moves her antennae. I have no idea what went wrong. I have had another shed last night and he's already...

    Mantis hybrid

The viability largely depends on having complimentary genetic components. Chromosome count is key. Something with 20 chromosomes might produce anything viable when mated to a species with 24. That is why for animals it is best to start by making hybrids within the same genus. For example...

    Seeking a career in entomology

UF does have a good program. Although I can't say too much more as they are a major rival. To make a comfortable living in the sciences you might want to consider work as a professor (teaching and doing research). They generally make good salaries, but entomology is highly specialized and the...

    Mantis hybrid

Has anyone thought about trying to make a mantis hybrid? For example, crossing Deroplatys desiccata with Deroplatys lobata .

    Hello

Yeah, the ghosts can be kind of boring, but have a very alien appearance. But then again most mantids seem to just sit there I rather like their calm disposition and leaf mimicry. The African mantids I had were fun and very aggressive, but as adults it got kind of scary. I can still hear the...

    Hello

So I finally decided to join. I have always loved insects and nature in general. The mantis was always at the top of my list. When ever I found one it was like a treasure. When I realized that you could buy the ootheca, I started raising them. I learned much in those early days from the...
