Ive been waiting for a few weeks now for my mantis to lay an ooth, with little sign of it coming. I was wondering do I need to place a solid object such as a stick or small log in the tank so that the mantis can attach the ooth to it?

My mantis has done this several times while I have been handling her, I thought maybe it was just the mantids way of getting rid of excess fluid. Wouldnt it aim the fluid at the threating stimuli if it was a defense mechanism? As far as I can see it just releases its load in any old direction.

How long does it generally take for a mantis to lay an Ootheca?

I agree with macrojunkie, I tend to my crickets once a week and have no problems with smells. Just make sure you keep your cricket container as dry as possible I think, letting little to no moisture in there.
