    constipated?

I just had the same problem with a Pnigomantis medioconstricta that I used to keep on a plant. The main advice I got was raising temperature. I put her into a semi ventilated box with some damp kitchen paper and a spotlight on top, so I guess I did three things at once: raising temperature...

Which is probably because someone mixed up inches and cm there.

Hehe, I thought it was interesting. That feeding regimen was recommended to me by the breeder I got my mantids from, so it had been tested before. Good to know the biological theory behind it!

    wasted meals

Much more frequently of course ... there are always plenty of fruit flies in the enclosure as long as I keep them together. I seperate them at fourth instar and then drop in a couple of house or green bottle flies every other day or so (unless they look like they're about to moult).

    wasted meals

    Ghost Mantid nymphs (L2-L3)

Your pictures are just awesome, wow! I was thinking of getting some ghosts, now I guess I have to. ;)

    Look Ma! One hand!

Yes! They often catch another prey with the other arm while still holding on to the first. I sometimes feed a whole swarm of flies that are actually too small just to see that. :)

    Sphodromantis viridis mating

Hehe. I stuffed her until she ignored or batted away any prey ... I really like my only male, ya know. ;) But now she gets a break from feeding for a couple of days.

    Sphodromantis viridis mating

After sixteen hours the male flew off unharmed. A little later back in the enclosure: Yay - success! :D
