Rock laid an ooth : )

At least finding this little clip made me feel better: I'm grateful for any feedback on why my first and only mantis died after seeming so healthy. Thanks...

Rock laid an ooth : )

@Seattle, you are weird... Everyone, Rock died today. Totally didn't expect it, and am not sure why. :( :(

    mantis ready to die?

I looked at this thread because Rock died, and i wonder if she was just old. May 10 - Sept 18 is only 4 months though. She just laid that crazy ooth, but acted like she needed to lay more. She was still "pumping" up and down last night. Last meal was Tuesday, a decent sized grasshopper. I...

Rock laid an ooth : )

Thanks to everyone who told me to be alert to a possible ooth coming from my huge-bellied Chinese female. She'd been out exploring my brick wall for several days straight. I slowed down on her food source as suggested. But after 2 days i wanted to make sure she had access to food so on Monday...

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

So what happens if they are eggbound but not laying the ooth? I'm peeking in on her over and over all day. She's alert again, acting normal, hanging upside down, stalking crickets, eating normally again, responding to my voice when I call her name (for realz.) I tried not feeding her about 2...

    What just Happened

I wonder if one of the flies caused him a problem, like choking trying to eat it too quickly. They are such complicated creatures -- a balance of super-fighter and delicate beauty. *sigh*

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

Please, somebody tell me this is within the normal range of bellies : ). After almost a week of refusing crickets, I brought her a half dozen houseflies and she ate them all up. Yesterday I gave her 3 crickets and she ate 2 of them at ONCE (one in each 'claw.') I let her out for a stretch and...

    Not using raptorial leg?

    So sorry...

    Eggbound mantis

I'm wondering if that's the problem my mantis is having. She's eating far less than usual, and I can see horizontal lines her belly that look like the outside is barely holding her "in" along those lines. I can see them moving in and out. She's alert and all, but I've read about females...

    We're mating mantids folks!

Adorable, and hysterically put : ).

    My homemade cages

I just love this whole This Old Birdhouse idea for mantids! Birdhouses are inherently lovely -- plus if there's a good spot to hang one, that solves any feline issues one like myself might have.

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

Yeah -- it occurred to me today that just cause it lays an egg sack doesn't mean they are going to grow into anything or hatch. Thanks for the definitive info. Rick, I appreciate your expertise on the handling issue. I decided a while back to let her crawl on me if she comes out, but not to...

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

This sounds a lot like what's been going on. Oh my gosh! Time for me to read up on taking care of an ooth properly!! She looks better tonight. I'm such a hovering parent -- tonight i again "bugged her" by taking her out and setting her (with her still holding onto the jar's cap) into a clean...

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

This is Rock on my arm, with my son attempting his first time letting her crawl on him. And tonight, still no change in Rock. Although the CRICKET I put in with her just molted... Rock, BTW, has molted exactly 5 times. I thought there were more than that.

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

Rock's a GRRRL?!!?? Far out! But, she has never mated -- she's been with me since she was 2 days old. [i had a sibling too who wouldn't eat, and died on day 5; same day as the vast majority of the babies, according to the other people who took babies. But they were separated from Day 2.]...

Chinese mantis not eating, not moving much

My 3 1/2 month old mantis has barely eaten in over a week. For a couple weekends in a row, I've let him (not positive of gender but seems to have 7 segments)out of his cage and he gleefully would climb my interior brick wall and spend the night up there. And fight me off when I'd hoist him...

    Cricket colony

Bingo! Just the basic, start-up info I needed : ). And boy am I glad i found the tip about Cheerios -- they should put that in their commercials! Next task: figure out how to get Rock (3-month old Chinese mantis) off my interior brick wall and into his cage for the night. Without our weekly...

    Sensei gets his fill

Oh I wish I'd seen this thread a week ago (but I just joined.) I'm in steamy August Chicago and haven't found any bugs around my building to feed my mantis except houseflies. But the other night I picked one of these odd flies off the window and fed it to my Rock. It was a Mantis Fly. Now I...
