    vacation feeding

It could be a better idea to have the cloth above the water level and see if it wicks up enough to be useful.

Be sure to test out the bucket idea well first... the capillary action of the fabric can actually keep the water dripping instead of just stopping when it's wet. You wouldn't want to drown anything or have the whole bucket of water on your floor in a day or so.

    'overwintering' fly pupae

Well around here the ground rarely freezes more than a couple inches down, so I'm sure they've got plenty of places to go either way. I think I will go ahead and try like that. And I had already decided to use the dog food based formula you've posted previously, Phil. Thanks for that. (I think...

And I'm eating a grape, not giving you the bird :)

    Hi from Portland, OR

Well hello MrsManda :-) No luck here so far, I'm not sure if the boys have been out looking yet. I spent yesterday up in the Hoyt Arboretum searching myself, got lots of live food but no Mantis :-( If your guys are religiosa I'd be happy to buy one! Ms. Cassandra is fattening up quite nicely...

    'overwintering' fly pupae

I've trapped some green bottle flies, and want to culture them before the wild ones disappear for the winter. Right now I only have one Mantis, so I don't need a lot of flies at once. I've read about how blue bottle pupae tend to die off in the refrigerator over A short time, but I know these...

    Gestation period?

Ah good. Still crossing fingers after about a month after collection, no males (or any other mantids) found yet. Our summer was cold, so maybe she was still young.

    Urination?

No smelly stuff, and she's done it a couple more times. No aiming at anything either. I'm sure it's just normal now. I've been feeding her extra since the crickets got cleaned out, fattening her up, hoping to get eggs if she did get mated in the wild. I think she can pee farther than I can lol!

Does anyone like to grow mushrooms?

I have grown several kinds of mushrooms. Right now there's a sad, neglected grow of oysters here lol. The easiest way to grow shiitake is outside on logs, pegged with dowels that already have mycelium growing in them, but I've also grown them on bags of sawdust. And yes, lots of people will...

    Urination?

Found it. Sorry, I just hadn't tried enough word variations. It's covered in the post "Do mantids urinate?" In the health section in 2008. Sorry again, but I don't have a way to copy/paste a link on this phone. -edit- thank you Phil, and here's an attempt at pasting a link to the thread. Damn...

    Urination?

Oh, and her droppings look normal, at least up to the last one maybe a half hour ago.

    Urination?

First off, don't google Mantis urination, unless you want to learn all about what ooths are used for in chinese medicine :-/ My question is, is it normal for them to squirt out clear liquid? The female religiosa here just did, while eating a grasshopper. It looked intentional, she moved her...

    Gestation period?

Hey thanks for this reply Rick- I'm more hopeful that my wild caught female was already mated, as you suggested in my introduction post... Would this timing likely apply to M. religiosa as well? (I did do some homework, but most sources online seemed to focus on how quickly laying could happen...

    Hi from Portland, OR

Hey thanks everyone. About the mating- she's not very fat, and I've had her well fed for weeks with no laying. Peter, I'm a native here too, and actually grew up in Yamhill County. I'm right in the city now, out toward 82nd. Maybe my nephews in McMinnville can catch me a male!

    Hi from Portland, OR

Hey there I'm Vincent. I found an adult female M. religiosa in the yard a few weeks ago, and decided to bring her in before the cold kills everything... Man, I had no idea how cool and interactive she would be! I don't know if it was from a garden center or what, but they're rare around here so...
