    Odd twitching/shaking behavior

Thanks for the responses everyone. I am going to conclude its some form of stretching because none of the mantis have died afterwards. I wish I could document the action on video but it happens randomly and too quickly.

    Odd twitching/shaking behavior

I have noticed this in multiple mantis species but there doesn't seem to be any ill effects afterwards. The symptom is that the mantis tuck their heads down and their hands in then their antennas also point downward over the face. The scary part happens right after that. Their heads start to...

    SouthEastern FruitFlies.

I also have a positive experience ordering from southeasternfruitflies.com. My order arrived in a timely manner in a well packaged box. I ordered a "producing" hydei fruit fly culture and some media. Communication is outstanding. I sent an email late at night asking if there was a chance to make...

    Mantis ID

Females do tend to jump a lot when they are thin. Even after laying an ooth they may get jumpy again. Fatten her up and she should calm down.

    Tammy Wolfe (US)

Had a wonderful transaction with Tammy. She kept me up to date with every step. Packaging was excellent. She supplies food during transit for the mantids. I highly recommend! Thanks, Tammy!

    Mantis ID

Assuming you wanted to place the open net enclosure on the lawn or backyard you will need to constantly watch it. Maybe it is possible to place the female in a smaller closed net enclosure which is put into a bigger open enclosure? You won't lose the female and if a male comes along he can cling...

    Mantis ID

I think so. When my female limbatas became adult I would periodically leave them outside on a guava tree. There were several instances I found them mating with males.

    Mantids in popular culture- Go!

On Oct. 15th there was an episode of R. L. Stine The Haunting Hour called "Swarmin' Norman". A boy finds a praying mantis who is able to command other insects.  Here is a clip on Youtube

    Should I be concerned???

Just the smell can attract flies to land in the vicinity of an area. If there is a family of cats they can be defecating around the area which attracts flies.

    Exploding Mantises?

She didn't want to make you worry tenoderaterror! Just wait till she becomes an adult with an increased appetite. You will wonder why they DON'T explode.

    Mature male won't mate

I have a similar problem. I have trouble with a shy or scared male and an aggressive female. I've had an experience where I would guide the male onto the female's back and he just kept on walking. The male mantis would step over the female's head while she's still eating then fly away. The...

    Were you afraid of mantids?

I was wondering if any of you were afraid of mantids before you started to raise them. I caught wild nymphs in my backyard and was too afraid to touch them for 2 molt phases (they are adults now). I never held an insect on purpose and most met the end of a fly swatter when I encountered them. I...

    Another Grass mantis(Brunneria borealis)

Nice pictures Nikkko! Those antennas look cool but also heavy. I plan to raise a Brunneria borealis some time in the future.

    Adulthood aggression?

Maybe its the way I raised my mantids but my adult female refuse to do the threat pose. I try to scare her with objects but they just take a quick swipe at it. I totally agree with Ismart that males are wussies. They fly away with any chance they can get.

    Color Changing Mantises?

I have noticed that all the male mantids changed color depending on their surrounding after a molt. From different shades of green, brown and even yellow. The females however refuse to change color. I really want a blue mantis...
