    Mantis ootheca?

    I found this on an oak log in Central NC about a month ago. It's the size of the last section of your pinkie finger. I tried to use the mantis ootheca ID link but it didn't work. I have it sitting on an outdoor window shelf at the moment.

    Here's a real mantis this time. Found him in North Carolina and he was quite large. There's a lot of mantids in this area, I always run into at least a couple. In the first picture he's sitting at the top of the wall. I thought I'd get to see a mantis feeding in the wild since the grasshopper...

    Looks almost like a grass mantis but it's definitely the thread-legged bug. Thanks AndrewNisip, I would've never found that.

    He also has a proboscis-like mouthpart and (i think) tiny, beady eyes - they're very small so it's hard to tell.

    I ran into this little guy today (in North Carolina). He's about 1.5 inches from the head to the end of the abdomen and around 4 inches from the end of his hind legs to the tip of his antennae. He's brown and very skinny with a short set of wings. His antennae are bent in the middle and his legs...
