Yeah, I saw my first housefly eclosing the other day and it freaked me out! I was just like, "What's wrong with its head??" ...took me a few moments to realize that that was how they broke out of the casing. Now I've seen more than one blue bottle do it too...freaky!

Yes, they have had standard drivers side air bags long before it was mandatory in the US. :lol:

and now you know why flies appear so stupid, they have a air bag where there brain's should be. :blink:

Aaw! My favorite cartoon! Incidentally they puff up their head like that by sucking air in through the moth (their spiracles are not exposed yet) to increase the volume of their hemolymph (bug blood) and direct it to that air bag thingy. Ain't nature great?
