Hello all!

As you may know, we are hosting a Mantis site (link in sig) where we give general information about mantids and sell mantids (if we have them in stock), ooths, and other stuff. But I'm not here to advertise the 'mantis selling' part here.

I had an idea about having a mantis-only Wikipedia, as it is possible to download the Wikipedia source files. So, I uploaded them and started working a bit on the layout.

I thought it would be a nice idea to share the site with you all, so we could perhaps all post our knowledge and experiences in it for everyone to read. It is possible to upload files, so you can also upload your photo's and put them on the pages. As you know, everyone can edit pages. This way, everyone could make his own page about the species he is specialized in.

Please use the following link: http://www.beestje.eu/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

If you like this idea, please reply and edit what you want! You can also register on the site and have a little profile so you can see that you edited that specific page.

If you need help, you can ask me, or post on the Help site of the wikipedia, which I am creating now. We can also create a 'links' page where everyone can post his links - also if you sell mantids and/or trade them! And, if you register and you click your own name, you can edit your own page to put your profile in, so other users can just click your name and read the stuff you entered :)

Greetings,

Giorgio

Thanks, let's hope it does get used now and people post all they know :)

I'm still working a bit on the layout. It looks a bit too crowded at the moment...but I do like the colors (if you register you can change to the default Wikipedia style, but still). Suggestions are welcome!

This is a wiki, not a Wikipedia. The latter is a specific site run by the Wikimedia Foundation and based on the wiki infrastructure.

Looks like you have a good start on that page.

Excellent idea! I think it'd be nice if the page was more... white? ...so that it looks normal? Yeah
Yup piece of cake to do that. However, I thought it would be nice to have something different. Perhaps we could use Mantid Forum colors :)

Also, if you register you can change the skin and use the default one.

Wow, that's a lot of info. It would be cool if you had individual information for every species in captivity, including notes, and caresheets...

Well, since everyone can edit it, he/she can add the individual information :) You don't have to register to edit.

It's quite easy, you can upload a picture using the Upload a file link (http://www.beestje.eu/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Upload).

Then you can use the following code to add the pic: [[image:pwf1.jpg|left|thumb|300px|Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii female‎]]

Quite easy :) Of course change the filename and name, but that's it! No need to add a whole address. Just upload the pics and use that code.

Thanks for remembering, Joossa! I spent a lot of time working on all the wiki pages for that site and you and Yen were the only two Mantidforum members to even reply to my post about it (February 2007?). I spent about a week straight working on the phasmid wiki. Unfortunately, nobody really spent much time on any of it (except a phasmid guy named Sammi worked on it too).

I'll be taking the Bidabug auction offline very soon (it's already inactive). I haven't decided what I'll do with the Bidabug wiki. Yen put a little bit of time into it too, including the following page and photo:

Good luck with your wiki, Giosan! I think it is such a great idea if you can get people to contribute. It truly is such an easy way for us all to share information, but unfortunately most people just don't seem to make the time to contribute. One downside of having a wiki site is that almost everything you put on there is automatically in the public domain because use of the software requires it. This means, of course, that you could copy nearly everything off the wikipedia.org website (or wiki.bidabug.org site) to get your mantid wiki started. After I spent about two months of my life creating wiki pages and trying to get others to contribute, I began to realize that my time would better have been spent working on my own websites. Essentially I was working on my own website, as nobody else was contributing.

BidaBug has one running as well:The home page.

The Mantodea page.
