One of my Thistles (L5) developed a black bulb of fluid on the side of the abdomen , it may have been an injury or some thing like a hernia.

I nursed it for 3 days with no change and the mantid deteriorated badly . I punctured the bulb and out flowed a black fluid looking like chewing tobacco. after a day she  just circled the drain worse  and I put her down . Difficult trying to deal with a patient like that........  S

It sounds like maybe the cuticle got punctured, but not the epidermis, which lacks the rigidity to keep the hemolymph from bulging out of the abdomen. The cuticle also plays a vital role in keeping bacteria out from the insides... so there was nothing that you could have done that you already did. :(  I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm glad that the mantis doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Yes she dragged the bulb with her for days without reduction , suffering . The puncturing drained but left an ugly mess and a quick demize.

I have corrected mismoults and other externals just not game at internal mantid surgery .  Thnkz for the feed back izbiggs......

Puncturing a sac of fluid always seems to cause death but even if it had lived a while it never would have made a molt. Good luck with the others.

Quite a few of these situations we have no treatment course , frustrating but that is nature.  Thnkz for your reply Orin .
