Abdominal Injury

One of my Thistles (L5) developed a black bulb of fluid on the side of the abdomen , it may have been an injury or some thing like a hernia.

I nursed it for 3 days with no change and the mantid deteriorated badly . I punctured the bulb and out flowed a black fluid looking like chewing tobacco. after a day she  just circled the drain worse  and I put her down . Difficult trying to deal with a patient like that........  S

It sounds like maybe the cuticle got punctured, but not the epidermis, which lacks the rigidity to keep the hemolymph from bulging out of the abdomen. The cuticle also plays a vital role in keeping bacteria out from the insides... so there was nothing that you could have done that you already did.  I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm glad that the mantis doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Yes she dragged the bulb with her for days without reduction , suffering . The puncturing drained but left an ugly mess and a quick demize.

I have corrected mismoults and other externals just not game at internal mantid surgery .  Thnkz for the feed back izbiggs......

Puncturing a sac of fluid always seems to cause death but even if it had lived a while it never would have made a molt. Good luck with the others.

Quite a few of these situations we have no treatment course , frustrating but that is nature.  Thnkz for your reply Orin .
