Once my two are all grown up this spring, and my big bookshelf enclosure is finished, I will be wanting to get a few more, and possibly try my hand at breeding.

What are good species for a new guy like me? (Medium or large species preferred)

Try ghost mantids They are really easy but they look great. Mantisplace.com has some i think and i should have some soon.

Ghosts are a bit on the smaller side though. I suggest Shield mantis, wide arm mantis (medium) or Giant Asian. All of these are pretty impressive, especially the shield and wide arm. And they are very easy to care for.

I thought about ghosts, but I don't really like thr way they look. I prefer the classic look of mantis I grew up on. But I have come to like other more flashy species, so maybe I will warm up to ghosts' by the time spring comes.

I agree. I personally don't care for ghost mantids either.

If you cant find wide arms i would get bud wings, i wouldnt get an african mantis though, they are just too boring, maybe you might want to look into Peacock mantids if you want a classic body shape but a flashy species

Would you want something that could live together in one big enclosure or in seperate enclosures? For something that lives together, maybe you should get gongy. They are pretty big. For a medium sized one that lives in seperate cages, maybe african. I heard africans are pretty fun mantids.

I have never heard of a lot of these. Can you guys send me pictures and a little article or something about them?

And I like the solitarity of the Asians I have, but I would really enjoy mantids that could live together.

I have been searching for info on these suggestions, not much luck.

But I did find pics of griffiin mantids. They are beautiful.

Can someone tell me how active/friendly the following mantids are?

Wide Arm

Griffin

Budwing

African

Wide arms can be sometimes sluggish. None of these mantids can live together.

What about the Texas (or Arizona_) unicorn mantis?

I hear they're communal...at least I think so. And they're medium sized....certainly big enough (I myself have little interest in the small species).

They have an almost clasic look.

I'm actually toying with the idea of making them my next species choice....But I don't know how easy/difficult they are.

im gettin a budwing soon from mantisplace.com

and also getting a p wahlbergii

currently own 2 orchids and gave 2 ghosts and 2 ocellas to my friends to keep.

Ill let you know how the budwing and stuff are when i get them

Oh yeah, female orchids, they are beautiful, aggressive, and are kinda large. (males, i think are just not shy, the one i got at least)
