So my chinese mantis has molted for the 7 or so time and this time around they have two pairs of what look like wings on their backs, except they aren't really wings, just the design of wings. Is this the last nymph stage before adult? I'm assuming that is where the wings are developing underneath...

Yup sub adult inatar. (One more molt to adult) (by the description)...a picture would solidify wether sub adult or pre sub (one molt from adult or two molts).

Okay...I'll get a pic tomorrow. But this is the first time I've seen these wing like designs, which is what made me believe they were getting close.

After they molt into an adult, How long do they typically live after that? I mean, from what I've read, chinese mantis can live about 14mos in captivity. They are about two months old right now, so that means they would spend quite alot of time in the adult stage.....

The temp greatly affects this...(and the sex)...females will live a great while (i dont know abt the long 14mo but certainly substantially longer than males...but males only a few months as adult (2-3)

But as afore mentioned the temp greatly affects this...as it directly controls their metabolism rates. High temps cause the mantis to "live faster" ...at a higher metabolism they grow faster, but however this greatly shortens their lifespan... so you can get an adult in a relatively short time but it will not live very long if this higher temp is sustained. And the opposite is for cooler temps...raising mantids at cooler temps will take awhile to reach adult, however will live for so much longer if this cooler temp is sustained. (But of course care for your mantids properly and don't keep them at sustained temps of <60ºF or > 100ºF to achieve a 5 year old mantis or one month old adult) as for most mantids this isnt normal temps to keep them.)) [{I'm not talking abt diapausing Empusidae or keeping Hot Gongys (you more advanced keepers :p }] .

Cheers,

Andrew
