So im tryin to breed my majs, the male mounted and was trying to connect, but the female's abdomen has the annoying habit of being pushed against her wings, idk if hes accidentally pushing it up there, but i have a solution! I took one of those clip things u would put in a planner and affixed it to the end of ther wings

That way, the abdomen cant be pushed up :D

it would probably permanently bend or break her wings, possibly making the male not want her. Plus the clip might rub against her abdomen

Doesn't sound like a nice thing to do to a mantis Alex, they will mate when the time is right and things are how they want them, why do people think that when they snap their fingers their mantis should mate? It can take time as well as patience... tricks are for kids my friend. So please don't be cruel to creatures either great or small. :(

I wasnt being cruel to her

The male was rippling her wings with his legs

I read that females do that with the abdomen to prevent mating

The male is deffo ready and so i'll feed the female more and try again in a week

To each his own for sure, but my point is they've be doing this (mating) for millions of years but you felt the need to physical distort her to make it happen? I've seen a teeny tiny yellow Orchid male find the target even though at first it looked impossible to me, with no help, like 10 times and every time I was still amazed.

Patience is a virtue young Alex. :)

I'm not trying to harp on you, just say'n ;)

i didnt distort her

i simply placed a piece of plastic on her wings so her abdomen couldnt tuck itself under them and prevent connection

i thought she'd be ready because she ate a huge blaberus roach the other night and has been adult for 3 weeks

i'll give her another week so they r both safe to breed

she'll breed if she wants to breed, and wont if she doesnt want to. putting anything there wont make her breed if she isn't ready, and may stop her from mating even if she is ready because of the foreign feeling on her wings. Wasnt very nice to do though, even if she's not permanently distorted it must have been very uncomfortable.
