Hello everyone. Old guy in Philly here. I've had this thought buzzing in my head, bugging me to get myself a nice mantid as a pet. I have done extensive research (Full disclosure: By extensive research, I mean looking at pics on reddit, as opposed to taking a course or reading a book) and found my way to your forum. After perusing the discussions and caresheets here, I feel I am up to the task. I look forward to talking with some of you and, as the months go by, posting pics of my new pet.

Welcome Mushroom!

I imagine Philly is pretty cold about now.

I hope you find a good pet for yourself and that you enjoy being in the hobby!

Welcome =)

Do feel free to ask questions.

Edit: omg... I just seen your signature! That's too funny XD

to the Group!

Looking forward to hearing more from you....

It is a darn shame... nobody should have an empty cup!

Thank you for the welcomes Jay, Rick, LAME, & dmina. Much appreciated.

>Jay -Yep, it is chilly in Philly. I hope this will be an enjoyable new hobby for me and I get a pet very soon.

>Lame -Glad you got a kick out of my sig. Wasn't sure if anyone would notice it.

>dmina -Yea, the empty cup is a drag. But it serves double duty as a cup for my morning green smoothie. So, it's all good.

>mantisman111 -Well, not sure what I'll be getting. I'll be making a post in the classifieds soon and see what folks have available. But it was a post in /r/mantids last week that pushed me over the edge from 'mildly interested' to 'gotta have one now'. It was pics of a pet Heterochaeta orientalis that knocked my socks off. (Here: https://imgur.com/a/guAxY) Holy ! That is the cutest, most interesting looking critter I have seen in ages.

Yup, chaeta are awesome. I had one for a few instars but sadly lost him to a mismolt last week. they're definitely not the easiest to care for. from your for sale post, and my experience with ghosts, they seem like the best for you. I loved all of mine, and I'm on my last of four adults. They live communally too, so it's great.

That's so sad. Sorry for your loss.

Yeah, I heard that ghosts are good for beginners. I've been watching some peoples pet ghost mantids on youtube. They are cute as heck. I get a kick out of the way they move around, and they seem so friendly too. I may wait until after the winter as I am concerned about a little nymph freezing in transit.

Most sell/ship year round without much if any issues. If you are worried though you could hatch your own ooth (ootheca) - most take 4 to 6 weeks. That would be much sooner than spring still. ;) Although you may be over run with baby nymphs. :D
