Arent male orchids suppose to be skittish??

this male orchid keeps flailing his forearms wanting me to pick his butt up and comes to me even though he's in his cup.

haha. does anyone else's mantis do this?

=)

Pretty much all my mantises do that, one of the reasons I find them so fun to keep. =3

My male orchids aren't skittish exactly, but they don't seem to enjoy it when I have to move them around or pick them up. They just sit there very still, with their antenna pressed flat against their thorax, or else they fly off a few inches. My female orchid mantis is the brave one, but even she threw a fit last night when I tried to photograph her. She tucked herself into a ball and rolled around flailing until I put her back into her container.

I wish I could come across some of these super friendly mantids that wave at me and come to me like everyone else.

maybe if you turn that frown upside down they may be happier to see you! :p ;)

My lil spirit does this lol, everytime ipass by she starts waving at me... i look at her, she looks at me.. then i can't resist picking her up ^_^

when she sits on my hand she's looking in my face and wigglling her but, and when i give her a fly she's in heaven

Sometimes we even watch TV together :p

right now when i type this she's on my shoulder watching the screen :p

hehe yeah

i notice if i look at it everyday and it notices me,

and it just looks at me too,

when u pick it up for like the first time,

and they seem to think they find u harmless and u have the hand that's feeding it,

i think it will recognize the hand that feeds it

(i got this quote from when i use to raise flowerhorns)

But yeah,

after a while it will recognize you i guess =)

but to make it easier i only have 2 =)

How could you have not found a friendly mantis with all the ones you keep? By your post and previous posts though it doesn't seem to me you want to look at mantises that way. You seem to have a rather sterilized approach to keeping them. Must admit I've always found it a bit odd that you think handling them is stressful and bad for their health, but that keeping young mantises in a large tank were they play the battle royal game till only a few are left, is somehow less stressful.

I gave mine honey from the time I got them, and I hand feed them a lot!

Every time M&M sees me he waves, and comes to my hand, and a lot of times he waves for each finger separately when he is on my hand, to walk up them like stairs, and he isn't happy until he gets all the way to my thumb, and then climbs up to play with my bracelet.

Sheila doesn't wave for me, but she darts for me, and then sticks her face out like "here I am!". And she doesn't climb my fingers, but she likes to make her way to my bracelet as well.

M&M loves his home, and always reaches for his cage or stick (whatever he sees first) and crawls back in when I am near it, but Sheila must love me more than her house, because she never lets go!

Kerrigan is definitely a female mantis. She is enormous in size, has a horn, and the v-shaped groove on her abdomen.

The four males I have are definitely all males, especially when you compare them to Kerrigan. Alas, the two adult males have forsaken me and ran off to New Jersey to woo Mantis Whisper's adult females.

Honestly, I don't think any of my current mantises really like me. Orchids don't seem as friendly as some of the other species I've kept. They just like to sit on their lids and pretend they're flowers until some unwary feeder insect wanders by. My first mantis was a wild caught European mantis and she was awesome. She didn't mind being handled or hand fed at all.
