Hey guys, My name is Thales, Im 20 and live in Pennsylvania. Currently a college student and my intended field of study is what brought me here, I plan to become an Entomologist. I have never taken care of Mantids before but have had various of other pets from small rodents, to birds, to a tarantula. I don't intend to get a Mantid as a pet right away, instead I will look into getting a ooth of one of the species that I can later release into the wild such as the Chinese mantis (only one I know off my head that can be let go into wild) partly just to see how they grow and mature with my own eyes, and partly so that when I do get a mantis to keep in my house I have experience with it. Of all the insects out there Mantids are my favorite kinds, just beating Ants and Wasps. And thats all I got off the top of my head.

Heyas and welcome. Nice state, Pennsylvania. Lived in Philly, Lancaster, and York,   Just don't like cold and snow any more, LOL

Hi and welcome!

The Carolina mantis is another species that is native to the US and can be found in the wild.  The Caroline is smaller then the Chinese mantis but they are full of personality.

Welcome to the forum! You've come to the right place to learn about mantids. I'm in Virginia and go to Pennsylvania often for vacations and weekend getaways.  :D

Yeah I actually looked into that after I posted, but thanks for letting me know anyway! Ill do some research into both species when im free, I probably won't get any until I have a break from college stuff so I can actually watch them grow before I release them. but I am leaning towards the Carolina mantis just based off looks, haven't read up enough on either to make a decision based on anything else.

Welcome to the forum! I like the thought you put into getting a mantis and how you are deciding to start it shows a great thought process. I hate when people get pets without doing research -_- I have a Chinese praying mantis and he is great. That species has a ton of personality I think that mantids in general tend to. Welcome to the hobby ! @Denis The Bug

Yeah I generally always try to look into what an animal needs if im going to take care of it Although all my pets I have right now (1 bird and 2 rats) I got without much warning cuz someone else didn't want to take care of them anymore.

I am sure Newtown has changed a lot over the years. Had some great times there in 1964.

Should be some great mantis hunting where you are or nearby. Happy Hunting!

Ah that was a while ago, This have changed a lot over the last 6 years ive been here, I can't imagine how it was in 1964. Its still nice, but its just getting more and more expensive here, and while my family does well we are nowhere near rich so its getting a bit frustrating. Other then that it is a beautiful place.

Was a small "summer" town. Very laid back. And So Quiet even during the day.     Just lovely.

Aye Many have been priced out of their areas.
