One of my Idolos molted to sub-adult today... unlike the other one who did last week... she seems to have mismolted and now has a leg that isn't working, but she is also acting wierd. She is no longer hanging at the top of the cage she is hanging on the second level away from the warmth... and when I watched her try to climb anywhere... she kept falling... there is plenty of stuff for her to use to climb back to the top and not a lot of clutter in the cage... Help???? Think she'll pull thru? I am gone all weekend from fri night until sun night for a pool tournament, so I can't be here to check on her.

Sounds as though you are doing everything right. Idolos are dumb and you can never predict what they will do next. Good luck with the tournament. Vegas? Are you APA, or have you risen above that? :D

Well, I hope she pulls through... I guess at least the 1st one made it to sub-adulthood without incident.

And... I've always been above that... lol... (though on a rare occasion, I will jump on a APA team as a sub) I am a women's regional BCA master. But not vegas... just one of the casino tour stops for BCA. I can't make regionals in March and this is a little closer.

Well, I'm impressed! I was an APA 7 when I could still see the table clearly. I played and beat the Black Widow in Vegas in one of those "pay to play the pro" games some years back and was impressed by how she managed to make it look as though I really won by giving me some great leaves! :D

  lmao

Impossible to say how this will play out. If she's having trouble gripping I have to ask if you have any metal screen in your enclosure. If they try to grab it too soon after molt it rips all the spikes from their feet. I would guess she fell after molt and damaged her legs in the process. Only time will tell if she recovers, but late stage Idolo do not have a good survaval record after a fall.

She can grip the fake flowers in the cage fine, so that is where she hanging out now. As for the metal screen, the top is metal screen.... So I will have to look into putting something up there as an alternative. Thanks... I am hoping she will make it thru... so far she is ok.

That's what I was going to ask. I'm an idiot and quickly learned that there is absolutely no room for error. Say no to metal screens with Idolos.

OK, that's what I expected and I'm sorry to hear it. So long as she can grip something she may survive. I have seen an adult Heterochaeta sp. molt perfectly only to lose all the spikes on his feet and fall after trying to climb from his skin to a metal screen. Idolo are the same. Please cover the screen with sticks or a mesh laundry bag from the dollar store. Sorry this happened.

Yeah - and I've seen subadults of several species just SNAP OFF their little tarsus and wear their claws down to nubs on metal screens.

One experiment I started, but didn't finish, was to spray the screen with Plastidip Spray (http://www.mpexport.com/products/speciality/plasti-dip.html). If anyone has tried it, let me know how it goes (and if it's toxic after it dries - eek!).

Will do as soon as I get home on Sunday... Hopefully she makes it until then, and the other one who hasn't molted to subadult yet.... Hopefully she waits until I fix the cage.

I have been using #42 mesh screen from McMaster-Carr.

It is very fine mesh, almost like cloth. I have not had any molt problem using it yet.

But larger mesh screen, a different story!

Also, using those 12'' net cubes, I have never had a molt problem, but they are so hard to find.

You can hot glue some fake leaves over the surface, but buy the fabric ones, not the plastic ;)

Update: Fixed her cage... She loves it... And she is still doing fantastic... But I worry for her making it to adulthood since she is completely missing one back leg.
