I just thought it was an "ugly" brown color. After a closer look.....

Yeah man, I just grabbed some similar shots of my L6 Chinese, that yellow spot under the throat really surprised me and the tones just after a molt were almost pastel before the vivid red kicked in.

 
My gosh... imagine all we miss or don't see with our naked eye! He's beautiful!

 
Nice shots! I love how mantids hide so much color in plain sight. Taking closeups is like revealing a work of art.

 
Great shots! :) If it were not for the common chinese mantis. I probably would not be in to mantids today. I tell myself every year i'm not going to keep any chinese, but i always end up keeping at least a couple. :rolleyes:

Ditto! My first mantis was a wild-caught brown female Chinese, so they have a special place in my heart. :)
