Chinese at L5 can eat small crickets. Be sure to water your crickets and feed them fish food/fruits before you feed them to your mantis though. Some petstore crickets killed our mantids before.

They should take a cricket/waxworm that has some guts exposed. Mine have always been aggressive and taken anything I offered. Just beware that cutting up a waxworm can be quite messy.
