hey all,

I was just wondering if male matises lose fertility with age. Like if I had a male adult mantis that was two months into adulthood, and a female that was just two weeks into adulthood, would it be okay to mate the two? Does it lower my chances of getting a fertile Ooth laid? Or does it make no difference either way?

I wouldn't even consider 2 months that old for adult male. I would imagine fertility could potentially drop as they get older, but if he is perky and able to get around fine I wouldn't worry about it. You can always re-breed her with another male later if you want.

The male's ability to produce sperm might be impaired with age, but perhaps they can retain sperm from earlier production if females are able to mate and keep sperm alive long enough within their spermathecae to continue laying fertile oothecae for the most of the rest of their adult lives.

Thanks everyone for all  your opinions and experiences! I will keep them in mind for future reference as my current mantises start reaching adulthood. :)
