I was told it was on only some. I could be wrong though.

Only some, and it seems to be correlated with wing length. That's why females don't hear as well as males, and some of the species with tiny or no wings at all don't hear at all.

That makes sense though. Ones that cant fly dont need to hear bats signaling them out.
