I talk to my mantises too, when they jump off my arm I'll ask them where they think they are going or when they make a particularly spectacular catch of a fly out of the air I'll congratulate them on their dexterity. Or when one is having trouble catching prey I'll tell them to keep at it, they'll get it eventually.
I also reprimand feeders for trying to escape.
I talk to my dogs too but at least they can understand what I am saying somewhat. Not like with insects, I am basically talking to myself there.
And yes, the majority of my friends think I am the "weird bug lady" but they are also facinated by all the different species I have when I show them pictures. I try not to make it all I talk about but that's hard sometimes, I have to remember that most people aren't going to be impressed that a mantis I raised from L1 finally molted to adulthood.
