I talk to my mantises too, when they jump off my arm I'll ask them where they think they are going or when they make a particularly spectacular catch of a fly out of the air I'll congratulate them on their dexterity. Or when one is having trouble catching prey I'll tell them to keep at it, they'll get it eventually.Well if you're nuts for talking to your mantids, then so am I!

I also reprimand feeders for trying to escape.
I talk to my dogs too but at least they can understand what I am saying somewhat. Not like with insects, I am basically talking to myself there.
And yes, the majority of my friends think I am the "weird bug lady" but they are also facinated by all the different species I have when I show them pictures. I try not to make it all I talk about but that's hard sometimes, I have to remember that most people aren't going to be impressed that a mantis I raised from L1 finally molted to adulthood.
