Dyed Excelsior Shredded Wood

Hi,

I read some where that you are not suppose to use Dyed Excelsior for fruit fly cultures. Is this true?, is the dye harmful to the flies.

I don't care much for excelsior. I piece of plastic screen works better and can be reused.
