You can use anything you want. If the mantis is able to grab hold of it and it can't get away easily then it is fine.

No offence intended but unless you know better Rick I'm afraid that's not quite true. I've been told by a number of keepers that you can't feed them crickets as that could result in death. This is why I want to be sure that locusts are safe to use.
