In my shcool courtyard there have been tons of feamle mantisies running around tryign to fidn a place to lay eggs. I found an ooth myf riend showed me. It is a chinese ooth. How can I tell if it fertile. Supposedly tehre are tons of matnises in teh courtyard.

Yeah, you can't tell by looking. Chances are, though, it is probably fertile. Nature probably already did its job by now.

Yept I have to agree, most wild ones are assumedly to be fertile, take it inside and put in container, and spray it every other day with warm water, in about 6 weeks you will see it hatch, I almost ;) guarantee it.

It depends when it was laid, if it was laid 6 weeks ago then it could hatch now ;)

I found a couple of Chinese mantis oothes this weekend too.

One is so light it seems like it's empty. The twig it was on broke and I found it on the ground under the bush. The other was eye-level and on a branch.

These are the first oothes I've handled so I wasn't sure how they should feel. The one that was on the ground is so light the light breeze blowing moved it a couple feet.

Could this one be already hatched from the spring and it is still around? Do they usually last the summer after hatching?

I'm putting both in a tank to see if anything happens. Got nothing to lose.

Ooths are light. They hatch in the spring but if you take them indoors they will hatch in 4-6 weeks or so.

Generally, hatched ooths have little strings branching out from the bottom or tiny holes in the bottom. And yes, most ooths are very light.

Hmm. Ok. I need to put some netting on top of that tank then to keep the critters in. Hopefully then don't hatch too soon. I ordered a few ghosts and want to get acclimated with them before dealing with the newborns. Perhaps I should put the oothes in my window till spring? Might be too much to handle with the new ghosts and a bunch of new chinese mantids.

Dang. It appears I also found some poison ivy while finding those oothecae... Now where did I put that Calamine Lotion?
