First spider... kind of a special case.

Even though I've observed them to be somewhat tolerant of each other--it's not uncommon to find more than one spider in a web--they will very likely cannibalize one another in such a small container.
Should I seperate them then? Maybe let a few of them go and raise a few to get an experience? This is all new territory for me to be thinking about. I'm used to not wanting to be anywhere near spiders but now I'm thinking about raising slings? crazy.

How about this little guy? Found him in my garden outside while hunting isopods. Could I get advice on how to care for him and maybe an i.d.?

All this mad talk about spiders makes me want to grab a can of RAID !!!

But Nikki Mantis says if I use that word again, she'll poop on my shoulder.

The new spider looks like it is in the Thomisidae family (Crab spider).

I found that I can keep them just like a mantis. A couple of sticks or a fake plant in a deli cup will be fine. I like to see them do the crab pose when they are disturbed or ready to catch their prey. :)

After some research I thought it was a crab spider, but didn't see a picture close enough in resemblance on any Southern Ontario Spider reference lists. He's reallly small, should I keep him in a smaller cup or will he handle a large one fine?

Does the spider spread its front legs out when disturbed?

The cup it is in, in the photos, looks fine.

Just tapped on the cup a little bit. He was not pleased. And yes he spread his legs really wide.

The cup he's in is tiny, and we'll grow at least 3x the size if the bigger ones in the garden were any indication (there were about a million of them)

Do you plan on adopting your friendly neiborhood spiders now? :) lol

You will notice that the Thomasid catches its prey in a completely different way than the Pholcid.

You can put it in one of those 16oz cups that is half as tall as a 32oz. That is what I normally use for those types. Any bigger and it may not feed.

They are much less likely to hunt prey down than a mantis is.

I read they dont spin webs to catch things like the Pholcid, but ambush instead. I just got a 16 oz cup today actually. I can turn that into a spider home once the old tenants are rehoused lol. I'm not planning on catching all the neighbourhood species lol. I was hunting for isopods for a culture and saw it. Thought it was a really cool looking spider and caught it.

Really, that spider will be fine in the little cup for a while.

It just may not be as comfortable for you to feed and clean up after your spider, if you are afraid of it.

Those will mostly stay on their plant or whatever, once they establish a spot.

I just pull out the furniture, pick off the dried up prey items while the spider is still on the furniture, and set the furniture down somewhere while I clean the cup.

When I use a fake plant as furniture, I just stick the stem in a little vase while I have it out of the container for cleaning. Usually, the creature will just stay on the plant.

She's getting bigger...

I thought spiders molted when they grew, but I dont see an exuviae in there. Also have a new spider moved into the room. Haven't cupped it just letting it chill. It has significantly shorter legs and a fatter body.
