This reminds me of last year at my table at Bugfest. There was a kid who I believe may have been handicapped in some way. He was very very nervous because of the mantids. Well we had one out for people to hold and his parents eventually got him to get close to the mantis. For whatever reason the mantis jumped on his face. Of all the kids for that to happen to it just had to be this poor kid. He probably won't get near another one for the rest of his life. That mantis hadn't jumped even one time all day before that.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I always thought that adult females would rarely ever jump or fly, but apparently if they really need to get somewhere out of reach, they will. Funny story Rick although I hope the kid doesn't go smashing every mantis he sees.

If you slow down the video or pause it, the hop looks actually pretty cool.

I've had that happen to me so many times, I've lost count at this point. There is a reason I lovingly refer to praying mantises as face huggers. <3

Thankfully, I have rock solid nerves so I just laugh and gingerly remove said mantis off my face while trying to avoid getting poked in the eye with a foot. After a while you start to learn to read when they are getting ready so you can catch it before it happens. Still, I love to get the adults with wings to fly over though I usually have them aim for a hand or my shirt rather than my face. =p

Face huggers. xDD Bahaha. <3
You laugh now, but one day when you wake up on the floor and there is a mantis crawling off your face, you will see just how dangerous these face huggers can be. :alien:
Yeah, they move their legs forward a bit, and they get that look in their eye...

:p
The funniest thing is when you see they are going to do it and move back, but they try anyways and epically missing their mark. Silly little bugs. :tt2:

They jump often if need be. Some females will fly before getting heavy with eggs.
