Hello all!

before asking, I didn't know exactly where to post this

my Chinese mantis: Echo is now on its 7th molt since I have found it, I'm very curious on what the *** of my bug actually is. I've searched online and can't find a definite photo of a female/male sub-adult Chinese from the underside to compare with my own.

I know the counting of segments if the best way to check, problem is that I'm still new to this and don't actually know where to start and where to stop.

if anyone could provide a photo that would help tremendously. Since I just moved into my own home, my uploading options for photos is currently next to none... I'm operating off a windows phone (wp8) and unfortunately it doesn't allow me to upload in anyway through the forums. I've tried every possible way.

any help would be appreciated, and sorry if this has been posted/ answered before within the forum or if this was the incorrect place to post.

Hi. It seems like you posted in the right places because this post (http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7110) is in the Breeding and Nymph Care section. You can see photos in that link above of the female and male underside of Hierodula membranacea (The pictures of the adults are easier to see the differences than the photos of the nymphs). If you cannot tell from that post of the H. membranacea then I can take pictures of my T. sinensis that are pre-sub up to adult.

Ha! Good stuff...

yeah if you could post those it would help, since its the same species. Mines just passed its 7th and will be on its 8th molt sometime this week

Okay, I will get the pics tomorrow since it is late now. That is weird. So you found it when it was L1? I would guess that it's 8th molt is to adult, is that right from what you can tell from the wingbuds?

My how to thread will work just fine for your species.

Basically your females will have a large end segment, the same size as all the rest of them, males will have two, and quite long antennae. Typically males have a more narrow abdomen, only slightly wider than the pronotum, a females will be much wider (the pronotum is the part behind the head down to the first hidlegs)

Awesome!

you guys have helped tremendously. After all this time hoping for a female I've had one the whole time :D

it's abdomen is definitely wider than the pronotum, and I'm counting six segments all day.

Thanks for all the help in identifying my friend!
