Hi. I'm pretty new to the mantis game and have never seen mantises mate and I can't find anywhere how long it usually takes them. I have two ghosts and they have been going at it for just about 20 hours now. The male has been on her for that long anyway. I'm worried after this length of time, before too long the female will get fed up and kill the male. You think should try to separate them or just leave them alone? Is this a normal length of time?

Ok. I finally searched correctly and found the answer on the Mantis Care Sheet written by Peter Clausen. I guess I will try to separate them now.

Well there are plenty of threads on this, especially in older "breeding" section. But just so you know, just because the male mounted, doesnt mean they mated. Males can sometimes stay mounted for TWO! whole days before mating even starts!!! Impatient breeders usually blow on them to snap the male out of his day dream, or poke at the male so he starts. But more than likely if you manually seperated them, the mating was unsuccessful and the ooths will gain no nymphs. Just let them be... They know what there doing =P

Yep!

It is common for mantids to remain connected for many hours.

Sometimes it is dangerous to both to remove them, unless the male is not holding on. If he is holding on, he will claw her tighter and can cut her, and if really aggrivated she may turn around and grab him. Only remove a male if you can slip a bamboo stick or something like it under him and he is not holding on. ;)
