I have a pair of Giant Asian mantises (named Pearlesca female, and Ivory male) and want to try and mate them WITHOUT the male being eaten. What are good techniques, or are there any specific requirements to get them in the right mood to mate? I tried to mate them today but it didn't go so well...they are both fine but the male just didn't seem to quite recognize the female and wouldn't stay on her back. He kept crawling off and when I tried to put him back behind her he would mistake my hand or my tweezers for a female  , which is always fun when a male tries to grip onto your hand lol. When he finally did grip onto the female the female got rather aggressive and tried to attack him, I was watching and stopped her from getting him thankfully. But wow she can be aggressive! The male seems slightly slow and maybe old acting? I think? which I have seen Chinese mantis males act like when they are old.
Would colder temperatures cause the male to act slower? It has recently gotten cold.
I am hoping to get a successful mating with them, any tips and advice are most welcome!
